About the Belarus Project
The Belarus Project supports judges, lawyers, human rights advocates, and journalists in making their
case before international fora and intergovernmental bodies regarding President Lukashenko's wholesale
assault on human rights and the rule of law in Belarus. A large part of our efforts goes toward bringing
Belarusian civic leaders to the U.S. State Department and to the UN to tell their own story of the
situation in Belarus. This also gives them the opportunity to meet with their colleagues and network
with human rights organizations and other NGOs that may be helpful to their cause at home.
The League
works closely with its affiliate, Charter 97, as well
as other human rights groups in Belarus. The League
has translated and published the 1997 human rights report
of the Belarusian Helsinki Committee prepared by former
Constitutional Court member Mikhail Pastukhov. The League
issues a weekly Belarus
Update, distributed freely by e-mail, which gathers
news from various sources. The League also helps to
translate and make available Charter 97's newsletter
and other relevant materials.
The League's goal is to bring international attention to the Belarusian government's systematic
violations of freedoms of expression and basic human rights through briefings, publications, and
increasing awareness of the problems in Belarus at the UN and other international bodies.
