Honor Killings

Colleagues,
The League holds regular briefings on items of interest
to members of the Third Committee and other UN officials
working on human rights and humanitarian affairs. Monday's
topic is "Honor Killings" and the forthcoming
resolution at the Third Committee. The League's briefings
provide an off-the-record, informal opportunity to discuss
the current topics in human rights and humanitarian
affairs at the General Assembly.

SPEAKERS:
Asma Khader is a lawyer and women's rights advocate
from Jordan working on a variety of legal cases, many
of them relating to honor crimes. Ms. Khader is one
of the founding members of the National Campaign to
Eliminate So-Called Crimes of Honor, a group of Jordanian
lawyers, doctors, judges, and other activists concerned
about the murders of women by male family members for
reasons relating to the concept of family honor.
Jane
Connors, head of the UN's Division for the Advancement
of Women, will discuss the practice of honor killings
and crimes of passion worldwide and possible international
responses and remedies.
The International League for Human Rights, an NGO with
special consultative status to ECOSOC now in its 59th
year, is devoted to defending the defenders of human
rights and strengthening the international mechanisms
to protect human rights for all worldwide.
