Honor Killings

September 21, 2000

Dear Colleagues,

The League holds regular briefings on items of interest to members of the Third Committee and other UN officials working on human rights and humanitarian affairs. Monday's topic is "Honor Killings" and the forthcoming resolution at the Third Committee. The League's briefings provide an off-the-record, informal opportunity to discuss the current topics in human rights and humanitarian affairs at the General Assembly.

Monday, September 25
1:15 p.m. to 2:45 p.m.
Law offices of Patterson, Belknap
1133 Avenue of Americas @ 43rd Street, 24th Floor

RSVP: Collette Barcia (212)-684-1221, ext. 104

SPEAKERS:

Asma Khader is a lawyer and women's rights advocate from Jordan working on a variety of legal cases, many of them relating to honor crimes. Ms. Khader is one of the founding members of the National Campaign to Eliminate So-Called Crimes of Honor, a group of Jordanian lawyers, doctors, judges, and other activists concerned about the murders of women by male family members for reasons relating to the concept of family honor.

Jane Connors, head of the UN's Division for the Advancement of Women, will discuss the practice of honor killings and crimes of passion worldwide and possible international responses and remedies.

The International League for Human Rights, an NGO with special consultative status to ECOSOC now in its 59th year, is devoted to defending the defenders of human rights and strengthening the international mechanisms to protect human rights for all worldwide.

We are now updating our fax lists and would appreciate your faxed responses with corrections and the names of officials working on gender issues.

Catherine A. Fitzpatrick
